Newsletter August / September 2018

Despite the ‘Summer Season’ (and what a Summer!) for classic car shows drawing to a close there are still plenty of upcoming events for club members to enjoy.

Monday 3rd September is Club Night at The Ruffwell, Thorverton and will be a busy evening. We have a talk by Ben Coombes on his ‘Pub2pub’ trip from Russia to South America in a TVR. Our talks usually start at 8.00 but this month it will be pushed forward to 8.15 as a little earlier we will be doing the Charity Cheque Presentation following another very successful Historic Vehicle Gathering at Powderham.

The Committee has agreed that the overall charity ‘pot’ will be £21,000. With donations of £4000 each to our three main charities, Dream-A-Way, Dartmoor Search & Rescue (Ashburton) and The Baton. The remainder is being distributed, via the Giving Machine, to our helpers, Exeter Sea Cadets and the 1st Exminster Guides as well as all charities represented at the show. In all, visitors cast over 4,800 votes in support of their preferred charity.

In addition, a special donation of £1,000 will be presented to the local group of the British Red Cross as The Dowager Countess of Devon (of Powderham Castle) is one of their main supporters. She has kindly accepted our invitation to attend the Presentation.

The Rally sub-committee have already had a meeting as we begin the planning for next year’s event on the 13th & 14th July 2019. The event relies on a large group of volunteers to help during the year and over the weekend so if any of you feel like helping please contact any of the Committee.

David & Mavis Cherrill who look after the Trade entries did say they wish to stand down after this year but have agreed to one more year! Good on them BUT 2019 is it! So, would someone possibly like to ‘shadow’ them this year with a view to taking on the role in 2020? If so, please do let us know.

The COGS lunch is on Wednesday 12th September at Keepers Cottage, Kentisbeare. One week earlier than normal to avoid being too close to various club holidays. To book for the lunch contact Molly Luxton on 01392 841270.

Saturday 15th sees our Club Stand at the very popular Sidmouth Classic Car Show. Pre-booking is essential. Contact Mike Lavers.

On Monday 17th a large contingent of members will be off to South West Ireland for a 12-day holiday and another group are going to The Esplanade Hotel, Newquay for a three-day weekend starting Friday 21st. Both had to be pre-booked.

A new Club Event on Sunday 30th is the ‘End of Season’ rally at Lady’s Mile Holiday Park, Dawlish. It is a ‘drop in event’. No booking required, just turn up! More details from Mike Fenner 07890 833 851.

Club Night on Monday 1st October will include a talk by Sue Harrod (who is visually impaired) driving 13 ‘flat out’ laps in a 1967 Ford Mustang.

We are going back to the Greenbank Hotel for our Winter Break on November 18th/19th/ 20th. Book with Linda Ryder. Dinner/Bed/Breakfast. Room Rate. P.N. Harbour View. £159.00. Limited. Inland Room. £149.00, Single, £95.00.
